What is that saying…
change is the only constant. Yes, well, I am a creature of habit. I like routine and structure. So, when something unexpected comes my way, it takes me a minute to adjust.
However, time waits for no one, right? And leave it to time to bring along its cousin change.
Remember when you were a kid? And either at your elementary school or the neighborhood park playground, there was a see saw? All the other playground equipment was something that you could do alone: the slide, swings, merry-go-round. The see-saw was a two-person ride.
Once you found a partner of similar size, to make it fair, it was a go.
When You Were Up
When you were up, the air seemed fresher, cleaner. The momentum would blow your hair around in a glorious whirlwind.
Your effort to push off was important but without your partner’s free fall you couldn’t remain up. Your effort sent you in the right direction, but their effort kept you up there, in the sky.
When you came back down, sometimes the board would hit the black top with a thud. It was a little jarring, sometimes it would hurt. With bent knees, hands holding tight to the handle, it took just a little strength to push off because as you pushed, the weight on the other side coming down pulled you up.
Sometimes, if the weights were uneven, you would only get midway and have to push off again. But it was worth it to get back into the sky.
Life is like a seesaw.
Enjoy Every Moment
When you’re up you feel like everything is as it should be. From your vantage point you can see your relationship, finances, career, living situation clearly, and your hair has never looked better, Lol. Enjoy every moment because it will end.
I’m not saying everything is going to crash and burn.
However, there’s no guarantee whether those changes will be good or not so good.
When you’re down your legs are shaking because you must hold your life up so it can function. You’re tired and thirsty, but you can’t let go of the handle, or you might fall off. There’s nothing to quench your thirst. All you can see is your responsibilities, your burdens, your pain, hold on because this will end too.
Wherever you are, up or down, time will go on and your life will change. Enjoy the good and take solace when it’s not so good because it will be again, eventually.
I have a tattoo of a rose on the inside of my wrist and through one of the petals is an arrow to remind me that, like time and change, joy and pain are likewise partners on a seesaw; one cannot exist without the other.
“Everything flows and nothing abides, everything yields and nothing remains permanent.”
Heraclitus, Ancient Greek Philosopher
