Post #27: Beginning Your Day With Intention

Before you get out of bed…

in the morning, take a few minutes to determine your intentions for the day.

Don’t think about how you feel in that moment. Think about the day you would like to have and how you would like to move through it.

Do you want to be present? Filled with gratitude? Joyful?

How about forgiving or at the very least not angry.

When you use intentional thinking, you are placing yourself in your lane before the race. There were times when I rose in the morning and proceeded to experience my day like I was running all over the field letting my feelings lead me.

When you tell yourself to have a certain mindset for the day, you are more likely to stay on track.

An authentic person lives in the moment

I can’t get away from that phrase, Lol.

When I try to process the idea of being an authentic person it feels gargantuan. However, I know exactly what it looks like.

It’s when I interact with things or people around me from a place that feels no hesitation, no forethought of what my correct responses should be, my energy is without interruption so there is no need to check in with my ego before I speak.

I walk away from the interaction feeling balanced. Nothing left unsaid. Nothing feels undone.

It Was a Pure Moment

When I woke up this morning, I felt uninspired. I didn’t want to get out of bed much less check my to-do list for the day.

So, I told myself that all I had to do was be myself. To think less and just feel every step I took when my boots hit the ground. To observe everything around me without getting overwhelmed. And to just be there for the ride.

I got out of bed and after breakfast, a quick workout, and a shower I was on my way to Walmart.

After finishing my shopping and heading to the front of the store a gentleman flew by me saying, “Where is everybody?”

That’s when I realized that there were no cashiers, only self-check.

He doubled back, then passed me again saying, “Where are all the cashiers?”

And without thinking I responded, “We are the cashiers.” He looked at me and we both had a good laugh. Going back and forth with “Where’s my vest?” and “How much is my employee discount?”

It was a pure moment. I felt like me. I wasn’t trying to be anything else but me. It was a lot of fun.

Getting out of your head

Getting out of your head takes effort. It takes intention.

Have you ever been triggered by something, anything, and been instantly transported to an event in your past where you were hurt in some way and suddenly you are exhibiting every emotion that you felt then, in the present moment?

You may or may not know what is going on, but everyone around will. The disconnect between your behavior and what is going on at that moment will confuse everybody.

Becoming adept at recognizing the trigger, re-routing it back to the past, and understanding that it has nothing to do with where you are now saves your energy, your body from stress, and keeps a space for peace in your heart.

Why would you want to re-live your pain?

Tell yourself to snap out of it and you will feel an emotional shift.

Practice, practice, practice.

What have you learned?

The end of the day is an opportunity for going over everything that bothered you about how you carried yourself, what people, places, or things triggered you, and asking yourself what can you do differently the next day?

Journal, read self-help books, check the internet for knowledge and resources. There is no excuse for not being able to efficiently evaluate your day and if and how you need to tweak your attitude ever so slightly.

Going through your day as your authentic self is much better than leaving your emotional state to your past, your pain, or things outside of your control.

Researching your past to learn not to make the same mistakes in your present effectively changes your future.

“Life can only be understood backwards: but it must be lived forwards.”
