Post #59: Three Ways to Nip Heavy in the Bud

Things have gotten…

a little heavy lately. Not negative, just heavy. So, this post is going to offer three ways to instantly lighten things up before you even get out of bed.

I’m sure that you have learned many techniques in your life to combat the Grrr’s, well here are three more, Lol. And if this is nothing new to you maybe you’ve come across this post because you’re in need of a little reminder.

Each day is an opportunity to do things differently and better than the day before.

So, let’s get on with it shall we?

1. Share How You Feel

Sharing any emotion, sadness, anger, anxiety, or you just don’t know what’s wrong, can in some cases lessen the emotion. Even if the listener doesn’t have a solution, just feeling heard and valued can be enough to change your state of mind.

Saying how you feel out loud, if you’re listening to yourself, will put your thoughts into perspective. Talking to yourself has the same effect and may redirect your energy to what needs to get done in that moment. Like getting up and into the shower.

This includes journaling. Writing it down has the added benefit of being able to look back at your entry at the end of the day and gain some insight as to why you felt the way you did.

Of course, I’m talking about moods and relatively small problems that are in your control.

Anything bigger might require a doctor, therapist, or spiritual counselor. Nobody knows what you need more than you. Move accordingly.

Acknowledging, verbalizing, and honoring your feelings are you being a friend to you. This also means that you might have to give a little tough love, Lol.

2. Don’t Forget to Breathe

If you are so deep into your feelings and you refuse to let it go, talk about it, or write it down, try breathing exercises.

I’m not referring to normal breathing. Even if you are in a relaxed state normal breathing is at most times very shallow. Take a moment and pay attention.

Deep breathing exercises will help you release tension, clear your mind, and set a bar for you to return to throughout the day. One of calm, peaceful, serenity. Deep abdominal breathing also activates the parasympathetic nervous system, a network of nerves that help the body relax and conserve energy.

Breathe in through your nose, filling up your belly, for a count of three or four. Then breathe out through your nose, pushing all the air out of your belly for double the inhale. So, if you breathe in for a count of three breathe out for a count of six or whatever count feels good to you. As long as the exhale is longer than the inhale.

I like to pause for a couple of seconds between the inhale and the exhale.

When on the exhale imagine any fear, frustration, anger, sadness, tension etc., being released into the air around you.

Continue for as long as you need or desire.

3. Leave It Right There in Your Bed

If you have things to do, places to be, people to see, leave it.

Leave it right there in your bed until you return home and can face the problem with insight and perspective.

The great thing is, is that it might have left on its own. That’s right. It could have been just an emotion (in the body) that needed to work itself out.

Too many times we help an emotion grow into a feeling (in the head) to become something unnecessary.

Leave it and regarding your day fake it to make it. At the end of the day, you either have worked it out already or may even find that you have forgotten what it was that was bothering you in the first place.

The Real Challenge

Well, there you are. Three ways to combat the heavy and arm yourself with the light, at least for today.

Tomorrow will be another opportunity. As each day of practice goes by you will find yourself waking up with the light and maybe a smile on your face.

The real challenge is to keep the sense of positivity present in your mind and body throughout the day. You’ll know it’s working if you feel a smile in your eyes.

If you lose it, re-focus, the goal being not to let the outside world take over your inside world.

“Positive anything is better than negative nothing.”
