If you ever want to…
make a change start with yourself. Yes, we all know this, but do we know this.
We think of change as worldwide, profound, and only evident when visible. However, nothing starts out that way. Change begins with a thought, a few words, an action. Something very small, seemingly inconsequential, and private.
Also, where it was born is not always where it will be raised. Maybe many tried to raise it, but only one or two were truly successful. The rest believed that they had failed. Not so.
Everything in this life is piggy backed. It seems that there is more innovation than invention, which involves everyone.
We are all adding our share of ideas and insight.
Changing a Mindset
My goal now is to make a difference as far as how people value themselves, specifically as individuals within relationships. Also, how they have a hand in how things turn out in their lives, not because they have the power to change fate. No, their power lies in their mindset.
There is the world and then there is the world that is in each one of us. Not to mention that each generation has a language all their own. Furthermore, within that language there is a way to do and see things dictated by their very personal experiences and how they were affected by them.
Everybody is an island, so to speak.
When I was a teen in the eighties the music was amazing. I sang along, knew all the lyrics, but I didn’t understand them.
Now, when I listen, I am amazed at the wisdom those song writers shared from their own personal experience, that potentially could have changed my life.
One example is a song by the band Loverboy, “When it’s Over“:
“What’s he trying to say to you
What’s he trying to tell you
He don’t really care
Face the truth and realize
You don’t need his alibis
No more”
Actions speak louder than words. It took me years to really know that. In other words, until I was ready, the language didn’t matter.
What About the Delivery?
Why couldn’t I hear what was being said? Would it have been different if a real person, right in front of me, imparted the same wisdom?
Thinking back, many people tried to open my eyes when I was in a toxic relationship, and I didn’t listen. In retrospect it felt that I was unable to physically hear their words. Maybe, family? No, they tried too.
What is that saying? “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” Whoever is saying what you need to hear to improve, grow, evolve doesn’t matter if you’re not ready to hear it. Much less, do it.
I’ve said before that everybody must do their own learning. Although, we humans often believe that we are more advanced than we are, that we know more than we know.
Everybody Has Their Own Timetable
There are a multitude of reasons why an individual may or may not be ready for change as well as many reasons why that individual is unable to connect their life with what they are doing and how they feel about themselves.
Everyone has their own timetable. That being said improving yourself improves everyone around you that is ready to look inward.
Maybe there is some grand plan out there that allows one person to “wake up” in order to wake up others indirectly, and not a second before.
Who knows.
But I’ll say this, you are not going to achieve self-growth by focusing on everything outside of yourself. We grow when we take accountability for what we do. We evolve when we dissect our own behavior, reactions, triggers, decisions, etc.
Being Human Is a Solo Journey
Change is huge.
If you are there, don’t try to push your views, share expecting feedback, or judge others for not being where you are. All these things prove that you are not where you think you are.
There is always work to be done on the self.
Being human is a solo journey. Your lessons are yours to learn. But we can all help each other by improving ourselves first and foremost.
Can you imagine if everyone’s goal in life was to be the best version of themselves?
“The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches, but to reveal to him, his own.”
Benjamin Disraeli
